Supreme Steel Bridge Division has had a maintenance crew at Alta Steel since we fabricated and built the facility in the 1960s. Plant maintenance, shutdowns, and expansions have been an immense source of work over the years. In the beginning of the year, Alta Steel asked for some assistance with their latest expansion. The new walking beam furnace required the excavation of a 30 foot pit consisting of half inch sheet piles and screw piles to stabilize the surrounding weak soil conditions, as well as a truss system to support the sheet pile until the foundation walls were completed.
In three weeks, with help from the Supreme Group (Canron Portland, Vancouver and Supreme Plant One) for the sourcing of material, Bridge Division fabricated the three trusses that reached a maximum of 70 feet long, 16 feet deep, and 78,000 lbs. in weight. We also installed them in the 70 foot by 120 foot pit. This was a job well done by the shop and our maintenance crew. We were able to compress our schedule and meet the needs of our long-time customer, Alta Steel.
