Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion

In the summer of 2005, Canron Delta was awarded the contract to supply and erect over 18,000 tonnes of structural steel for the expansion to the Convention Center in Vancouver, British Columbia. Subsequently, the supply and installation of the metal deck and a 90 metre long covered walkway (bridge) that connects the two part of the Convention Center was added to the contract.

The shape of the building is unique, and there are areas of geometry that have created challenges in order to satisfy all the criteria provided by the consultants.

Here are a few facts about the finished Convention Centre.

  • Total area: 106,000 square meters (about 1.15 million square feet, or four city blocks).
  • In addition to the steel, there will be about 80,000 sheets of gyproc and about 1.5 hectares of glass.
  • The roof is capped with a six acre living roof, featuring a range of plants native to the west coast.
  • The building was used for the International broadcast and media centre for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
